It is the craziest thing that I actually thought of you jade week. I was a student at Beck Middle in 1995 and had the pleasure to be able to be taught PE by a great man. Rest easy coach, you deserve it because you sure made the lives of countless students better over a few decades!

I just learned about Coach Smarr's passing. I worked with him at Beck Middle School from 1987 - 1994.  He was was excellent teacher who loved children and always had a smile on his face. He and his co-worker (Elaine Harp) are now conducting PE classes for the Lord.

I just learned of Coach Bill's passing. Coach was a regular here at our restaurant (Eggs Up Grill McAlister Square) and was part of our family. Coach always had a smile on his face and even though he couldn't communicate very well, his smile was worth a million words. He will be missed. ~Adam Bair, Owner

A very good man- who taught me a tremendous amount as a teacher, coach, builder of men and the value of hard work. I was blessed to work with him for a couple of years with his pool company. I can close my eyes and feel the heat, smell the aroma of the Muriatic acid as James Crout and I readied pools for the summer season! #preparingforlife

Coach Smarr was my first PE teacher and I’m pretty sure he guided me through elementary school. He called me by my last name which became a nickname until now. I have many precious memories and so does my family.

Thoughts and prayers for the family.

Jeff Neal. Coach made a great impact on me. I went to Tanglewood where he was my PE teacher for two years. Then I went to Carolina High and he coached me in football. I used to go to the Clock drive in on Wade Hampton and would see him a lot. He always had a smile and encouraging word for me. He gave me the inspiration to become a teacher and coach in the County and I spent 30 years in the profession. A true hero and legend has died. I loved him and I am truly blessed to have had in my life. Praying for the family for losing such a great man.
