Born at home in Clemson, SC, David Calhoun Stephens was the son of the late Rester and Emma Stephens. He died at his home in Greenville, SC, after a 17 month battle with cancer.

Mr. Stephens is survived by his wife of 51 years, Janeen Kidd Stephens, as well as their four daughters and their families: Emma Janeen Stephens and sons (Joseph and Alexander); Laurel Anne Stephens Shaler and her husband, Lt. Nicholas Shaler, and their children (Anna Jean and Calhoun); Sarah Mae Stephens and her husband, Behrouz Kianian; and Mary Ellen Stephens and her husband, Christopher Dombrowski. Mr. Stephens is also survived by two sisters (Jane Owens and Anita Moore); a sister-in-law, Frances Stephens; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Stephens is preceded in death by beloved son, Jacob Calhoun Stephens, as well as his parents, a sister (Elizabeth Owens) and two brothers (R.L. Stephens and John Stephens).

Mr. Stephens attended law school at Baylor University, and spent most of his career with the Department of Justice as an Assistant United States Attorney.

Mr. Stephens was well loved by his entire family and numerous friends.

Although no formal Receiving of Friends will be held, friends may pay their respects Wednesday, December 16, 2020 from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown.

A private graveside will be held at Woodlawn Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Miracle Hill Ministries Children’s Home in Pickens County.

I had the privilege of working with david for 10 years as an AUSA in the Greenville Office. He was kind, he had a great sense of humor, and he was a heck of a prosecutor. As a young lawyer, I knew that as long as David was around everything was going to be OK. I offer my prayers and my condolences to his family. Goodbye my friend.

My mom was a court reporter in US District Court. Her favorite DA was David. She knew him and worked with him for a very long time. As a kid I remember her mentioning him very fondly. When she retired in ‘95 and I took over her position as a court reporter, he became my favorite also. He was so friendly and welcoming and also remembered my mom so fondly. I truly enjoyed working with him for almost 20 years and hearing his stories from years past. I will keep your family in my thoughts and prayers and I know you will truly miss him. He was a wonderful man and I could tell from the way he talked about his family he truly loved you all. So sorry for your loss.

David you will be greatly missed. My thoughts are with you and your entire family.

Dearest Stephens Family, surely you are hurting to have lost a husband, father, and brother so dear. I pray that you find comfort in David's legacy, as a man of faith, as an American committed to the justice system, and someone deeply and genuinely committed to his loving family. In Heaven, by the side of our Father, David will surely continue to serve as he did in his days here on Earth. Working with David, being mentored as I entered the federal court house in Anderson for the first time, having his friendship, guidance and support have made me a better lawyer, and I will carry those lessons for my lifetime and beyond as those lessons continue to be shared. I had the good fortune of working with David while I was a US Probation Officer.. His rate of prosecutions kept out office staffed in lean budget. He was a deep thinker with keen sense of right and wrong. Good Man.

I have known David for all the 51 years that he and my Sister, Janeen were married.
To me, David was a private person, but, he must have been a very honest man because my sister is that way.
The last time I spoke with him was just before my youngest brother passed away.
I am very saddened for Janeen and her loss.
My Lord, please take care of David, he deserves it.
