David Lee Mauldin, 91, beloved husband of the late Carol Jo Mauldin, passed away on Monday, March 25, 2024.
Born in Anderson County, SC, he was the son of the late Rushton and Ruby Mauldin. David graduated from Easley High School in 1951 and received his Bachelor of Arts from Furman University in 1955. After serving at West Point in the Army, David was involved in the family Chevrolet dealership in Pendleton until his retirement in 1992.
David first met Carol at Furman where he was a member of Kappa Alpha, and they were married at Buncombe Street Methodist Church in 1956. David and Carol shared 67 years of unmatched love, companionship, and joy. Their unwavering bond was evident to all who saw them holding hands at Furman events and at the Woodlands.
David’s devotion extended beyond his family, as he poured his resources and time into supporting Furman, especially Furman athletics. David and Carol received the Gordon L. Blackwell Alumni Service award in 1991 and, in 2009, the Southern Conference Distinguished Service Award. Together, they were 2018 honorary inductees to the Furman Athletic Hall of Fame. They were active members of the Paladin Club, received the Order of the Paladin, and served on the Paladin Club and Alumni Association Boards of Directors. David and Carol were involved in many Paladin Club fundraising events, including coordinating, and hosting the Pepper’s Dinner for the men’s basketball team, coaches, and supporters for over 20 years. David’s unwavering support for Furman athletics was unparalleled and he attended over 700 basketball games, whether in person or watching from home.
In 1974, the Mauldins endowed the David and Carol Mauldin Athletic Scholarship and, in 2013, made a gift to Furman’s football program which created Mauldin Hall within Furman’s Pearce-Horton Football Complex. The Mauldins’ devotion to Furman athletics and its athletes will leave a lasting impact on the community they cherished.
Despite his numerous achievements and contributions, David remained a modest and dedicated husband, devoted to caring for his beloved wife, Carol, until her last breath. His life exemplified the epitome of a true servant, quietly putting others before himself. His genuine kindness, sweetness, and humility touched all who had the privilege of knowing him.
He is survived by his sister, Mary Alice Mauldin and friend, Ann Spearman; niece, Leigh Nason; nephew, Hayne (Linda) Mullikin; great nieces, Emily Nason and Katherine Mullikin; cousin, Philippe Mauldin (Peggy) and his children, Ashley, Michael, Richard and Anna; and cousin, Patrick Mauldin (Valerie) and his children, Claudia, Peter, and Clyde.
