Dewel Lee Summey

January 18, 1917 - February 25, 2008
Dewel Lee Summey, 91, formerly of 202 Gardenia Drive, died Monday, February 25, 2008 at Oakmont West Nursing Center. Born in Asheville, NC, he was a son of the late Dennis W. Summey and Effie Austin Summey. Mr. Summey retired from Meritta Bakery and was owner of S & J Distributing Company. He was a member of Berea Heights Baptist Church where he was a deacon and Sunday school teacher for many years He was a member of the Gideon's International. Surviving are his wife, Mary Padgett Phillips Summey, of the home; a daughter, Wanda Guthrie and husband Jim, of Greenville; a son, Bobby L. Summey and wife Gloria, of Anderson; ten grandchildren, Marlon, Dwayne, Shonda, Angie, Paige, Reggie, Melanie, Sheila, Cheryl, and Scott; nineteen great grandchildren; eight great great grandchildren; two stepdaughters, Tracy Reems of Greer, and Georgie McMakin of Greenville; and three stepsons, Terry Phillips of Charlotte, NC, Glenn Phillips of Greer, and Dean Phillips of Easley. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Edith Pace Summey; a grandson, Marvin; and three sons, Gerald D., David D., and Harold D. Summey. Visitation will be held Wednesday, February 27, 2008 from 6:30 – 8:00 pm at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Northwest. The funeral service will be held Thursday, February 28, 2008 at 11:00 am at Berea Heights Baptist Church. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery, West. Memorials may be made to Gideon's International, 225 S. Pleasantburg Drive, Greenville, SC 29607 or Berea Heights Baptist Church, 6914 White Horse Road, Greenville, SC 29611.
