Dr. Ansel B. McMakin, Jr., age 88, died peacefully in his sleep at Pendleton Manor on May 26, 2020 after testing positive with COVID19.

Dr. McMakin was predeceased by his parents, Ansel B. McMakin, Sr. and Bonnie Grace Hopson McMakin and his brother, James Edward McMakin.

Born in Slater, South Carolina, Ansel was a graduate of Brevard College and Wofford College. He earned his master’s degree from the University of Tennessee and his doctoral degree from Peabody College of Vanderbilt University, where he met his wife Irene.

After his military service, Ansel went to work for the school district of Greenville County; first as a teacher and coach at Blue Ridge High School, then as the Consultant for Health and Physical Education at the district office.

Ansel is survived by his wife of 49 years, Dr. Irene Rogers McMakin, daughter Andrea Hermann and her husband Dr. Paul Hermann, and a grandson Adam William Hermann.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, May 29, 2020 in the Remembrance Mausoleum Chapel of Woodlawn Memorial Park, Greenville.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Northside United Methodist Church, 435 Summit Dr., Greenville, SC 29609, where Dr. McMakin was a longtime member and Sunday School teacher, or to the charity of one's choice.

With sincere sympathy

I fondly remember “bobo” helping him clean Slater swimming pool. He slipped and hit his head on the floor and was sliding towards the water. I pulled him back and helped him up. He never remembered it.

Remember Mr. McMakin from our days at Blue Ridge High School. Still remember when he entered the classroom, we would wait for him to speak to see what kind of mood he was in! Really good teacher and coach. My condolences to his family..

To Mr. McMakin's family. He was my physical ed teacher and was my coach me in two sports for 2 years.
I liked all my teachers, but Mr. McMakin will always stand out as one of the most, if not the most, respectful
men I have ever known. Loved seeing him at a couple of the Blue Ridge class of '60 reunions.

Sincere sympathy to Mr. Mac's family. He is fondly remembered from his Blue Ridge days. He was always a kind gentleman.

Worked with and under Dr. McMakin while at J.L. Mann. He was a good man and I shall always remember his kindness.Bill Utsey

I remember coach he was a wonderful person.

Coach Mac was my football coach with Coach Liston at Blue Ridge High School. One memory, when I pulled a muscle playing ball, was when Coach Mac found some strong liniment that didn’t start burning until I left the locker room and looked back and saw Coach Mac just a grinning.
