Ellen Rasor Wylie, 93, widow of Dr. C. Ray Wylie, died Tuesday, January 24, 2006 at Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Center. Born in Mountville, Laurens County, SC., she was the daughter of the late Sam J. and Blanche Culbertson Rasor. Mrs. Wylie was a graduate of Winthrop University and Duke University. She taught mathematics, first in high school but mostly at Winthrop and the University of South Carolina, where she also served as faculty advisor for the Baptist Student Union. She and her husband lived in Salt Lake City, Utah, before moving to South Carolina in 1969, when her husband joined the faculty of the Department of Mathematics at Furman University. Her interest in the education of young people continued after her retirement from teaching. This was evidenced by the Ellen Rasor Wylie Mathematics Scholarship Fund at Winthrop University and the Wylie Mathematics Scholarship Fund at Furman University which were established by her and her husband. For these and other contributions, Furman awarded her and her husband the Mary Mildred Sullivan and the Algernon Sydney Sullivan awards in 1982. She was an active member of the Travelers Rest United Methodist Church , as a former Baptist, she continued also to contribute to the missionary work of the Baptist Church. Surviving is a step-son, Dr. Victor Wylie of Santa Monica, CA.; a niece, Nancy Rasor Gutosky of the Twin Cities; and two nephews, Sam J. Rasor, Jr. of Norcross, GA., and C. Lewis Rasor, Jr. of Greenville. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by two brothers, C. Lewis Rasor and Sam J. Rasor. Memorials may be made to Travelers Rest United Methodist Church, 19 S. Main Street, Travelers Rest. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, January 27, 2006 at 11:00 AM at Travelers Rest United Methodist Church where the family will receive friends from 10:00 until 10:45 AM at the church.
