Esther Mae Owens Holmes, 78, of 407 Cherokee Drive, wife of Chester Henry "Check" Holmes, died Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at her residence. Born in Westminster, SC, she was the daughter of the late Reverend Ocie Franklin and Mollie Knecht Owens. Mrs. Holmes was a devoted wife and mother, retired kindergarten teacher and a member of Hampton Heights Baptist Church. She was Miss North Greenville College 1948. Surviving, in addition to her husband, are a daughter and son-in-law, Christie and David Williams of Greenville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Chester H. "Sonny" and Harriet Holmes of Charleston, Michael and Sally Holmes of Greenville; five grandchildren, Elizabeth Carpenter, Brian Holmes, Matthew Holmes, Josh Williams and Mollie Williams; one great grandchild, John Lewis Carpenter; two sisters, Eleanor Roper of Easley and Wilma Owings of North Augusta; and three brothers, Ansel Owens of Greenville, Leonard Owens of Greenville; and David Owens of Lake Wales, Fl. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Thompson and two brothers, Lewis and Joe Owens. Memorials may be made to the Chester Holmes, Sr. Endowment Fund, c/o North Greenville University, PO Box 1892, Tigerville, SC 29688 or Hampton Heights Baptist Church, 2511 Wade Hampton Blvd., Greenville, SC 29615. Visitation will be held Friday, July 25, 2008 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. in the chapel of Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. The funeral service will be held Saturday, July 26, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel. Entombment will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.
