Gladys Taylor Batson, 86, died peacefully at home, surrounded by her family on Thursday, November 22, 2007 at 206 Bradley Blvd. in Greenville. She was born in Simpsonville on February 11, 1921, the daughter of the late Davis Carlisle Taylor and Tecora Henderson Taylor. She graduated Simpsonville High School. Although she spent most of her life as a homemaker, she also worked for Winn Dixie Delicatessen and Vaughn Russell Candies for several years. Mrs. Batson was an active member of Central Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and sang in the choir for many years. Most recently, she was a member of Earle Street Baptist Church where she attended as long as she was able to do so. Her faith was her strength and guidance and she served as a shining light example to her family and many friends. Everyone who knew her loved her for her kindness, loving spirit, and strong faith in God. Surviving are her daughter, Carol Vaughn Drake; a sister, Marjorie Kesterson of Asheville; grandsons, Hugh Taylor McVeety Anne, Stephen John McVeety infirmed at Whitten Center; a granddaughter, Paige Chidester of Florida; and three great grandchildren, Brandt H. McVeety, Elizabeth C. McVeety and Donaleigh Chidester along with many nieces and nephews and her devoted dachshund, Ginger. She was preceded in death by her husband, James C. Batson, her first husband, Otis Frazier Vaughn, a son, Wayne F. Vaughn, and sisters, Kate Holland, Martha Bishop and Joyce Burns. Memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels, 15 Oregon Street, Greenville, SC 29605. Visitation will be held Saturday, November 24, 2007 from 10:30 a.m. until 11:45 a.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. The funeral service will follow at 12:00 p.m. in the downtown chapel. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
