Gordon Earl Powell

June 17, 1927 - August 24, 2008
Gordon Earl Powell, 81, loving husband and father, left the earth on August 24, 2008 to be with God. Born in Greenville, he was the son of the late James Humphries and Mattie Bell Walker Powell. Earl was a graduate of Greenville High School, class of '46 and became a Christian at age 19. He served as Deacon and Sunday School Superintendent at Second Baptist Church in Greenville, and later served as chairman of the Deacon's board at Grove Road Baptist Church. He became a member of Tremont Church of God in 1979 until his last day. Earl served in the 317th Tank Battalion, 3rd Army, US Army 1952-1954. He was employed at JC Penney Co. in Greenville for 45 years. Earl loved God, his wife and daughter and he loved this country. He was a Christian gentleman and a patriot. He was an avid Washington Redskins fan for over 40 years. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Bobbie Hannon Powell; his daughter Terry Gilliland and her husband Phillip of Taylors; and his nephews, Jimmy Powell, Jerry Powell, Steve Powell, Danny Powell, Kenny Powell, Randy Powell and Barry Powell. He was preceded in death by his brother, Rufus Powell and nephew, Billy Powell. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 26 at 11:00 a.m. at Woodlawn Memorial Park Remembrance Chapel with visitation immediately following the service. Entombment will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. The families will be at their respective homes. Memorials may be sent to Miracle Hill Shepherd's Gate, 11 Regency Hill Drive, Greenville, SC 29607.
