Harley Aaron Thomas, 81, of 18 Embry Street, husband of Betty Thomas, died Tuesday, March 6, 2007 at Greenville Memorial Medical Center. Born in Jackson County, GA., he was the son of the late Enoch S. and Mabel Graham Thomas. Mr. Thomas was retired from Furman University and was a member of Riverside Baptist Church and the Fellowship Sunday School class. He was a former Deacon, Treasurer and Sunday School Teacher at Morgan Memorial Baptist Church and Poe Baptist Church and was a member of the Sam Poe Masonic Lodge #284. A loving and compassionate husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, Mr. Thomas leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 63 years, three daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Neil Odom of Taylors, Mary and Phil Harris of Taylors, Wanda and Mike Ponthieux of Greenville; five grandchildren and spouses, Bryan and Traci Odom of Greer, Lisa and Jason Cox of Greer, Matthew and April Harris of Easley, Angel and Scott Tansill of Charlotte, NC., Nick and Brandie Ballenger of Charleston, SC; six great grandchildren, Trey, Aaron and Connor Odom, Emma and Riley Cox, Grace Harris; a sister, Hazel Rainey of Greenville; and a brother, Lloyd Thomas of Dallas, NC; and his companion Shitzu, Sam. He was preceded in death by a grandchild, Aaron McNeil Odom and a brother, Bill Thomas. Memorials may be made to the Riverside Baptist Church Television Ministry, 1249 S. Suber Road, Greer, SC 29650. Visitation will be held Wednesday, March 7, 2007 from 7:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 8, 2007 at 3:00 p.m. at Riverside Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Graceland Cemetery, West. The family will be at the residence.

I was sorry to hear of Harley's passing. I have many fond memories of working with him here at Furman. He was a good man. We, also, played golf together many times as part of the Carpenters/Plumbers golf league. We used to call him "Mr. Five Iron" because
