Dr. Helen R. Fuseler, 93, of Greenville was received by our Lord on Friday, June 27, 2008, following a brief illness. Helen was married to John W. Fuseler for 63 happy and wonderful years. Helen was born in Savannah, GA and grew up on Tybee Island. She was the daughter of John J. and Estelle Rebeski and goddaughter of Florence Martus, the Waving Girl of Savannah. Helen earned her BA in Fine Arts from the University of South Carolina in 1939 and a MA in education from Furman in 1956. She taught art for many years at several Greenville County schools. She retired from Parker High School as Art Department Chairman. She worked in many media but her favorite was watercolor. Her most notable watercolor was the Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly, the official South Carolina State butterfly. Prints of this work reside in the SC Governor's mansion and the permanent art collection in the White House. Helen received many awards including the Grumbacher Artist Award, and Evelyn Mooney award for creative horticultural achievement. In 1988 she was honored for her contributions to art and education by the World Academy of Arts and Culture; and received an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree. She was honored by the state of South Carolina by receiving the "Order of the Silver Crescent". Helen was involved in numerous professional organizations including the National League of American Pen Women; Greenville Artist Guild; Anderson Artist Guild; South Carolina Watercolor Society and the South Carolina Artist Guild. She was Founder and Director of the NLAPW National Miniature Art Show for 10 years; an advisory board member and former president of the Greenville Council of Garden Clubs; a member of Hillcrest Garden Club; Docent at Kilgore-Lewis House; a member of SC Beta Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa International Honorary Organization for women educators; and a member and artist-in-residence of the Order of the Jessamine. Helen is survived by her son, Dr. John W. Fuseler, Jr. a faculty member at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Columbia, SC and a brother, Jack Rebeski of Phoenix, AZ. Memorials may be made to the Kilgore-Lewis House, PO Box 681, Greenville, SC 29602. Visitation will be held at 10:00am with services following at 11:00am on Monday, June 30, 2008 at the Memorial Chapel of Buncombe Street United Methodist Church.
