Our beloved Ileana, friend to all, passed on peacefully at home in Montebello surrounded by family.

Ileana was born in Charlottesville, VA on December 2, 1967. She was the daughter of Alejandro and Maria Posada. She was preceded in death by her father Alejandro Posada and two brothers, Alejandro and Joaquin. She is survived by her mother Maria Posada and three sisters, Gloria Chmiel, Virginia Beach, VA; Giselle Weinstein (Matthew), Virginia Beach, VA; Marila Slye (Chapman), Fredericksburg, VA; and one brother, Julio Posada (Melanie), Edenton, NC.

She was married in 1993 and is survived by her husband David Shaner. Ileana is survived by her five children, Alexandria Shaner, Greenville, SC; Ashley Shaner, Harish, Israel; Chase Shaner, Charlotte, NC; Jackson Shaner, Greenville, SC; and Alina Shaner, Greenville, SC.

Ileana received her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in Music from the University of Virginia. She also completed a Master of Music in Piano Performance as a full fellow at the University of Maryland. In 1992, she was awarded a fellowship for the Doctor of Musical Arts program at the University of Maryland before making her way to Greenville where she has lived since 1993.

Ileana was a concert pianist and performed with the Brevard Music Orchestra and the University of Virginia’s Camerata Rotunda. She played solo and chamber music recitals in the southeastern United States and served on the piano faculty and collaborative piano staff at Furman University. Ileana collaborated regularly with Carolina Ballet Theatre.

Ileana taught piano privately in her home. She was a certified life coach, certified yoga instructor and was a co-founder of Virtual Viyu Yoga.

As a martial artist, she was a 5th degree blackbelt in the Japanese Art of Shinshin Toitsu Aikido, held the Ki rank of Joden, and was a Certified Lecturer for the International Ki Society. In 1996, with her partner Eric Harrell (Greenville), she won the first International World Cup Taigi competition in Tochigi, Japan. Since then, she has taught Ki-Aikido and performed in various demonstrations throughout the United States, Japan, and Russia. She was a senior instructor of the South Carolina Ki-Aikido dojo.

Ileana served on the vestry at St. James Episcopal Church and was the liaison with St. Francis Episcopal Church.

A “Celebration of Life” service will be held at St. James Episcopal Church on Saturday, March 11, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. To honor Ileana, the family asks those attending to wear beautiful bright colors.

Ileana loved the non-profit organization “My Neighbors Voice” and was a devoted ambassador, board member, moderator, and supporter.

Ileana's smile brightened the room! Training with her was always a learning experience.

I saw Ileana for the first time at an Aikido seminar in Greenville before she and David were married so my memories of her go back a long way. All of them from then until now recall vividly her spirit, her enthusiasm, and her concern for others. Much of the time I spent with Ileana was either during Aikido training or in the social events that accompanied it. There may have been an Aikido World Camp, a Chief Instructor’s seminar, a summer camp, or a local seminar that I attended and she didn’t, but I can’t remember one. Her dedication to learning, training, and performing Aikido with both grace and power have been inspirational to me and, I feel sure, to everyone who has known Ileana and trained with her. I feel doubly fortunate also to have known her as friend, and together with all those who have known and loved Ileana mourn her passing deeply.

I am so sorry for your loss. Ileana has a beautiful soul. She was patient, kind, compassionate, accepting, and so full of peace. I will treasure our last walk together, and I will think of her when I hear her favorite Cuban composer. I feel privileged to have known her. May her memory be eternal

St. James emails sort into my Family folder. I was shocked to see Ileana's beautiful face smiling at me on a "Rest in Peace" email. I sincerely hope that the Alleluias will be allowed at her celebration today. Her soul will be forever with us as she rejoins our eternal family of souls. May her family and friends be surrounded by the love that will radiate back from all the love Ileana spread in this world. Peace and love to all who grieve. My heartfelt condolences to Ileana‘s entire family and to all who knew and loved her. Ileana was - and is - a great Spirit, a wonderful woman, full of beauty, wisdom, strength & faith. I won’t forget my first conversation I had with her in 2013 at the Yoga Studio in Greenville where we met as it was unusually deep, soul infused, and pure. I could directly sense her radiant Light and her Love and her natural and deep connection to our Source that it felt to me as if I would have met a very old and dear friend. Since then our connection remained close in heart and in Spirit and the fact that I moved back to Europe in 2017 didn’t change that. She touched so many lives, always focused on family and the good aspects of life.

To Ileana's friends and family, It was my great fortune and pleasure to play lacrosse with the most beautiful and graceful lacrosse player at UVA. Did you know she was part of a team that went to the final 4 in lacrosse? She was fierce, wanted to win, very competitive. But she was also worried about the opposing team checking her on her hands. When you are a concert pianist, you don't want broken and bruised fingers. After a 2 mile run, lifting weights, and a 2.5 hour practice, this teammate of mine would head to the music room, practicing for 4-5 hours, late into the night. 1am, midnight. And bring so much JOY! To all of us. Ileana was so warm, kind, loving. A wonderful friend, a silly teammate. And boy, she was just gorgeous. How did someone be so humble with so much presence? I am devestated about this news...she was the best of us. We took time with her for granted. It fills my heart to see the photos on facebook of her huge, loving, laughing family. I was lucky enough to have know her for several years and know that I will meet her again. Thank you to her friends and family for loving her and bringing joy. With love, Jill

There was not a more beautiful, talented and yet truly and genuinely kind person than Ileana. She was a light in this world and I am deeply saddened at her passing. My deepest condolences to her family.

Dear Shaner and Posada family, please know that my heart and prayers are with you. Ileana was an angel for me here on Earth. She took me under her wing in high school at St. Anne’s Belfield when I moved to Virginia from Texas. She patiently trained with me practically every day during the summer teaching me field hockey. She and I shared so much together… clothes, each others chewing gum (already chewed !) and so many laughs and sometimes tears together. We also went to UVA together, and lived together at UVA for a year. She was and will always be such a bright light, full of love and kindness. She was so beautiful on the inside and the outside. Dear Shaner Family, I fist met Ileana at St James as I was Chase's K3 teacher. His sweet young mother was so worried about the separation anxiety he was having. He hated for her to leave him. She would have tears in her own eyes leaving him and she made it a point to ALWAYS be early to get him. I always admired how truly loving she was to her children and all the children of St James. Rest in Peace sweet lady.

We are so saddened to hear of Ileana's passing. Our family studied aikido with her and benefited greatly from knowing her. She was a patient instructor for our boys and a source of calmness, kindness, inspiration, and wisdom. She could also play the piano beautifully. She made a very positive impact on our lives.

Heaven has definitely gained a rare and wonderful angel. I enjoyed hot yoga and discussions about martial arts with her. She made her secret chili with Parmesan crackers for me and my zone partners in the police department. She was certain that I was one of the first to get her husband book. I am deeply saddened but know that she prefers a celebration and fun memories. I pray that her family finds peace and love as their center. May God accept her into heaven as one of his most beloved angels. May she live in all our hearts. There will be many angels learning yoga.?

I extend heartfelt ki to everyone in her family. Whenever I consider Ileana —such a positive spirit— I remember a moment with her on the mat in Boulder CO at a National Ki Aikido Conference years ago. She was practicing a ki exercise with me in which she was trying to move me backward from my holding her wrists. At first she could not do it. Note, I am 6ft and 200 pounds, so almost twice her size. Yet she was undaunted. She asked, “David, I cannot move him! What is this about?” David Shaner Sensei smiled and took her place and moved into me, then moving me backwards. He laughed, “Ah. Do not get distracted by the apparent weight of him, just connect and move right with and through it!” She then took her place, I held her wrists. She smiled, moved in and right through me, laughing, “Yes, that was it!” Every time I had the joy of training with her touched me and I am a better person for knowing her.

May Ileana's memory be eternal. Prayers ascend for Ileana, Shaner Sensei, and their family.

She called me Edgar-San. I called Ileana “magnificent,” from first sight in Aikido dojo, to her wedding to listening as she played the piano with passion and talent from another place. The Angels will adore her.

We are very heartbroken by this great loss. Illena really touched our lives. She always made us feel happy and welcome, especially our kids, both at her home and at the Dojo. We will miss her at the Dojo, but we will keep her in our thoughts and prayers. Blessings, The Horne Family

Ileana and I had one of those rare friendships that, at least for me, transcended time and physical separation. We met through our respective husbands who were college friends. So when David met Ileana, it was imperative that we meet her too, and that happened on our first ski trip together in Mammoth Lakes, California, prior to David and Ileana’s subsequent wedding in Virginia. I felt instantly bonded with her despite our age difference of nearly 13 years. That feeling never never changed and in the intervening 30 years, we would periodically come together on her side of the country or mine and have long conversations sharing secrets with the feeling that we had never been apart, despite the actual passage of time. On one such trip about 20 years ago, Ileana taught me how to fold fitted sheets, something she later referred to as her “secret power” taught to her by one of her sisters. To this day, as I told her on Valentines Day of 2021, I think of her every time I fold sheets. Those thoughts of Ileana are always positive ones, because that’s how she was. She made you want to be a better person by way of her own example of kindness and inclusiveness. On our last visit to Greenville in late April of last year, I was blessed to get a good deal of one-on-one time with her —cooking, walking, talking, shopping, and practicing my spanish. She took me to a session of My Neighbors Voice that she moderated, again showing how much she cared for her community and others. It was a good and hopeful time when the future still looked like a possibility and one which we prayed would continue. Yet, Ileana was at peace with the prospect that it would not continue, and that her life on this earth would be shorter than she had hoped. It was something that she openly discussed. She was not afraid. I will miss her so very much, but the light of her life that shown so brightly—the love for her family, friends and community— will continue to inspire me to me a better person. I will always think of you, Ileana, when I fold sheets, even though I will never be able to do it as well as you.

Ileana, i will always love and miss your beautiful soul on this earth. I know that you have been called for a higher purpose and i am grateful to have known you and learned so much from you over the years.

I knew her for more than 25 years, and although she and her husband, David, and my wife, Carolyn, and I live on different sides of the country, we have had not a few opportunities for extended visits over the years. There was not a day—or an hour in the day—that Ileana was not happy and cheerful and full of life. And it was contagious. She made every day a little brighter for everyone around her, and we are all blessed for the uplifting gift of her friendship. She will be missed very much.
