James Michael Putman

October 14, 1935 - July 8, 2008
James "Jim" Michael Putman, 72, widower of Gail Martin Putman, died Tuesday, July 8, 2008 at Rolling Green Healthcare. Born in Greenville on October 14, 1935, he was the son of the late James Odell and Mary Welborn Putman. Mr. Putman attended Parker High School and Furman University. He also attended George Washington University and served as an intern for the late Strom Thurmond in Washington, DC. Jim and Gail founded Putman Travel in 1987. He loved flying, cruising and traveling all over the world. Jim was a member of Sans Souci Baptist Church. At an early age, Jim began a courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease. For the past three years, he put up a good fight while his loved ones stood by with broken hearts. He will be greatly missed by his family. Surviving are a daughter, Jamie Putman Arens and her husband, Kurt; a son, Mike Putman and his wife, Beth; four grandchildren, Brandon and Lauren Arens and Sophie and Jack Putman; two sisters, Carolyn Pittman and Susan Williams; and a brother, Jerry Putnam and his wife, Lynda. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Upstate SC Chapter, 301 University Ridge, Suite 5000, Greenville, SC 29601. Visitation will be held Thursday, July 10, 2008 from 2:00 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. A graveside service will follow at 4:00 p.m. in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
