James Roy Smith, 81, went home to be with the Lord that he loved and served, on Monday, December 8, 2008. Born in Greenville County, he was a son of the late Ruben and Marie Hutchings Smith. Mr. Smith was a 1945 graduate of Parker High School. He was a master carpenter. He remolded and restored for hundreds of builders and families. He was a gifted story teller and a knowledgeable historian and talented mandolin and guitar player. His humor brightened the lives he touched. He was a faithful member of CrossPoint Assembly of God, formerly Southside Assembly of God, for over 60 years. He served as deacon, Sunday School Superintendent and secretary, youth sponsor and musician. He gave 15 years of service to CrossPoint Christian Academy. He was a Boy Scout Commander for 15 years and was a United States Army veteran, having served during WWII. He was the loyal, devoted, protecting and providing husband to his sweetheart of 57 years, Doris Sewell Smith; God's greatest gift to his daughter, who treasured him, Mrs. Darlene Smith Atkins and his son-in-law that he loved as a son, Reverend Randell Atkins. His greatest joy was his granddaughter, Doranden Atkins Powell "Inky Dink" and new grandson-in-law, Reverend Brent Powell. In addition to his family are a sister-in-law, Bea Smith; and nieces and nephews, Cheryl Smith Taylor and family, Lynn Sewell Chapman, Daryl and Tommy Sewell and families and Al and Wanda Bucklew and family. He was preceded in death by a brother Loyd Smith. Visitation will be held Wednesday, December 10, 2008 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. His home going celebration will be held Thursday, December 11, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. at CrossPoint Assembly of God, with the Reverends Randell Atkins, Wayne Powell, Brent Powell, Joel Hemphill and Al Bucklew officiating.. The body will lie in state at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park. Rick McClain, Andy Wilson, Daryl Sewell, Tommy Sewell, Donald Hart and Mark Phillips will serve as active pallbearers. The CrossPoint Pastors Advisory Board, special friends, students of CrossPoint Academy and members of Parker High School, Class of 1945, will serve as honorary pallbearers. The family will be at the residence, 104 Mill Pond Road, Easley.
