Janet Lynn Chasteen Dempsey, 52, of 48 Cross Club Drive, died suddenly April 26, 2004 at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center. Born in Greenville, she was a daughter of Sybil Culbertson Chasteen and the late William G. Chasteen. She was a graduate of Woodmont High School, Class of 1970 and a member of Washington Baptist Church. Ms. Dempsey was employed with the Greenville County School System where she served as Guidance Clerk at Woodmont High School for 15 years. She was currently employed in the Purchasing Dept. of Institutional Resources. She was very active in the Woodmont High School Athletic Booster Club and was Director of the Miss Woodmont Pageant for 7 years. She was a member of the Carolina Shag Club and a 23 year breast cancer survivor. Surviving in addition to her mother, are a daughter and son-in-law, Abby and Tim Porter of Easley; a son and daughter-in-law, Alan and Brandi Dempsey of Easley; two grandchildren, Janna and Maggie Porter; a sister and brother in law, Tammie and Ken Atwood of Piedmont; two brothers and sisters ?in-law, Steve and Lisa Chasteen of Anderson and Terry and Karen Chasteen of Piedmont; a very close friend, David Turner; 12 nieces and nephews, David Chasteen, Keli and Patrick Wright, Matt, Monte and Bonnie Chasteen, Will, Andy and Hunter Atwood, Kevin and Amy Bryson, and Darron Bryson. Memorials may be made to Camp Courage, in care of Carolina Shag Club, P.O. Box 17213, Greenville, SC 29606. Visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. Funeral services will be conducted at 12 Noon Thursday at Washington Baptist Church, Pelzer, with burial in the church cemetery. The family is at 113 Mellyn Street, Piedmont.
