Jean Newkirk Hoffman, 88, of Greenville passed away on April 24, 2022.
Born on August 2, 1933, in Cleveland Ohio, she was the daughter of Henry M. and Mary Potts Newkirk. Jean grew up in Cleveland and graduated from Hathaway Brown School in 1952. She attended Denison University in Granville Ohio.
She moved to Greenville in 1954 and began working at Greenville General Hospital as the director of volunteers. During this time, she met her husband Al Hoffman and they were married on December 2, 1956. Their marriage lasted 62 years until Big Al passed away on March 8, 2018.
Jean is survived by two children, Robert Hoffman (Priscilla) and Betsy Houck (Stokes); as well as five grandchildren, Brett Hoffman (Leslie) Blake Hoffman (Christopher), William Houck, Lee Houck, and Mary Houck and one great-grand-daughter Blythe Hoffman. She is survived by her brother Jim Newkirk (Myrna).
In addition to her parents, she was pre-deceased by her husband Al Hoffman and a brother Richard M. Newkirk.
Jean loved spending time with her family, especially over a good meal, a glass of wine and fun conversation. She loved to walk and would stop and talk with the people she saw along her route. Jean began playing tennis when her children were young, and she enjoyed the competition and fellowship she found in the sport the rest of her life.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, the Gospel Partners Sunday School Class, the Greenville Country Club, and the Metropolitan Dance Club.
Her Funeral Service will be held at First Presbyterian Church, on Thursday, April 28 at 3:30 p.m. with visitation before the service beginning at 2:30 p.m. The family will have a drop-in for family and friends at the home of Robert and Priscilla Hoffman following the funeral. Memorials may be made to the building campaign at First Presbyterian Church at 200 West Washington Street, Greenville, SC 29601.
