Jack Rendahl, 75, of Greenville, died peacefully Saturday, February, 10, 2007. He was born to Junald Leo Rendahl and Katie Myrtle Collins Rendahl on November 28, 1931, in Minneapolis, MN. He graduated from Concordia College in Moorehead, MN in 1953 with a major in political science. He attended the Graduate Program in Public Administration at the University of Oslo in Norway on a Fulbright scholarship in 1953-54, and graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Law in 1957. He was assigned as Fellow to the Harvard University Center for International Affairs in 1970-71 and was appointed Deputy Director to the Foreign Service Institute?s Executive Seminar in National and International Affairs 1979-81. Jack served as assistant to the Undersecretary of State Averell Harriman 1964 and was Special Assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs and Staff Director of the National Security Council?s Group for Europe 1971-74. Jack was a Career Foreign Service Officer in the United States Department of State. His diplomatic tours of duty included Washington, DC; New York City; Durban, Republic of South Africa; Stockholm, Sweden; and Vienna, Austria. He also served as Deputy Chief of Mission Deputy Ambassador to the United States Embassy in Dublin, Ireland. In 1981, he worked with the Office of the Legal Adviser, U.S. Department of State in helping to create the U.S. ? Iran Claims Settlement Office as part of the Special Tribunal established at the World Court at the Hague, Netherlands under the U.S. ? Iran Hostage Release Agreement. He was a charter member of the U.S. Senior Foreign Service ? Office of the Inspector General 1982-86 where he inspected and audited U.S. Embassies and Consulates and Congressionally funded programs throughout the world. His exemplary performance won him the Department?s Superior Honor Award and he was assigned to the Inspector General?s own inspection team. After retirement, he was appointed Expert Consultant to the Inspector General of the U.S. Department of State. Following retirement from the State Department, Jack was a member of the adjunct faculty of Florida State Univeristy in the Political Science/International Relations department. He served as an operations & management consultant to the Florida Department of Community Affairs, Office of Audit Service. He also served as a Performance Audit Manager for the Florida Department of Transportation, Office of Inspector General. Jack has been a member of the Minnesota Bar since 1957. He was commissioned ?Kentucky Colonel? in 1986. A gentleman in the truest sense of the word, Jack is survived by his loving wife, Ann Rendahl of Greenville; daughter Betsy Corey Frank of Park City, UT; daughter Julie Chamberlain Randy of Layton, UT; son Jay Rendahl of Temecula, CA; stepson Richard James Coe Lauren of Richmond, VA; stepdaughter Suzanne Coe of Greenville; stepdaughter Alisa Coe of Tallahassee, FL; sister Janet Hausmann Jim of Moorehead, MN; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Services will be held at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown, on Wednesday, February 14, 2007 at 4:30 p.m. Visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 13, 2007 at the funeral home. Wednesay?s service will be followed by a private celebration of Jack?s life at Connolly?s Irish Pub. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Greenville Humane Society, 328 Furman Hall Road, Greenville, SC 29609.
