John Douglas Davenport, 85, of 100 Lakeside Court, Clemson, died Saturday, February 17, 2007, at Oconee Memorial Hospital. The son of the late John Douglas and Louise Hill Davenport, he was married for 59 years to his beloved wife, the late Sarah Aiton Davenport. Mr. Davenport served in the US Army, Third Armored Division in four campaigns in Germany during WWII. He received the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster and the Silver Star for Valor, and attained the rank of Captain. He earned a Bachelors of Science from Clemson University, Masters of Arts from Furman University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland. He retired in 1990 as Professor of Psychology Emeritus at Clemson University, where he was head of the Psychology Department, Director of Psychological Services at Redfern Student Health Center, and Professor of Psychology. Mr. Davenport was a member of the Poinsett Club and the St. Andrews Society of Upper SC. He was a communicant of St. Andrews Episcopal Church. Surviving are his daughter, Jane Rush Davenport; two sons, John Douglas Davenport, Jr., and Robert Christopher and his wife Cathy Iles Davenport; and three nieces, Virginia Fraser Milam, Kathryn Fraser Mills, and Douglas Fraser Sullivan. Mr. Davenport was preceded in death by his sister, Ann Davenport Fraser and her husband William Townes Fraser. The family will be receiving friends on Thursday from 5:00 pm until 7:30 pm at the residence, 100 Lakeside Ct., Clemson, and following the service at the home of Mr. and Mrs. David Milam, 282 Rockwood Dr., Greenville. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2:00 pm at St. Andrews Episcopal Church. A private committal will be held at a later date.
