John Stephen ?Steve? Hooks, husband of Gladys Cannon Hooks, went home to the Lord, Tuesday, November 15, 2005 at Greenville Memorial Medical Center. Born in Greenville County, he was the son of the late George Franklin and Lourie Elkin Martin Hooks. A 1943 graduate of Greenville High School, Mr. Hooks was retired from Leroy Cannon Volkswagon and was a member of Rocky Creek Baptist Church. In 1942 he served as captain of the Shrine Bowl team and was an All Southern High School football player. He forfeited numerous college football scholarships in order to serve his country in the United States Navy in the Pacific Theater during WWII. He loved his Saviour, his family and his country. Surviving in addition to his wife of 54 years are a daughter, Phyllis H. Jaynes of Laurens County; two sons, Steve Hooks, Jr. of Bridgeport, WV., Lynn Hooks of Simpsonville; five grandchildren, John, Jason, Caroline, Jenna Hooks and Christopher Jaynes. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Emma Lou Dillard, Rosemary Studebaker, and Georgia Frances Montgomery. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, November 19, 2005 at 1:30 PM in the chapel of Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. Visitation will be held prior to the services from 12:00 until 1:15 PM. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
