Joseph S. Licata, born August 5, 1922, died Saturday June 14, 2008, after receiving the Sacrament of the Sick. Beloved husband, brother-in-law, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle. Mr. Licata served with distinction in WWII in the USCG in both the Pacific and European Theatres. A former insurance broker, Mr. Licata owned and trained thoroughbred race horses in Illinois and West Virginia from 1965 to 1988. After he retired, he was an honored volunteer at the McLeod Hospital and the Hospice of The Pee Dee in Florence, SC. He was an avid golfer and referee at several Nike tour events. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 10819 and the American Legion. Mr. Licata was a member of the St. Mary Magdalene Parish in Simpsonville, SC where he also served as an usher. He is survived by his loving wife Regina M. Licata; two daughters, Jo and Vincenta Licata of San Francisco, CA; two sons, Leonard Licata and his wife Helen of St. Louis, MO, and Joseph Murphy of Simpsonville; four grandchildren, Jennifer and Keith Nelson, and Caleb and Riley Murphy; one great-grandson, Kyle Nelson, and several nieces and nephews. A Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, June 18, 2008 at 11:00 am at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Simpsonville. In lieu of flowers the family has requested memorials be made to the USO World Headquarters Department WS, PO Box 96860,
Washington, DC 20090-6860 or The American Legion Heroes to Hometown H2H Program at www.legion.org.
