Josephine Suit Howard

Josephine Elizabeth Suit Howard, widow of Murray Milton Howard, Jr., died Friday, April 29, 2016.
Born on July 9, 1921 in Hartwell, GA, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Mack Lester Suit.
She graduated with honors from the University of GA in 1942 where she was treasurer of the Newman Club, Vice President of the Education Club, and a member of Kappa Delta Pi, Phi Kappa Phi, and Phi Beta Kappa.
She married Lieutenant Murray M. Howard, Jr. USNR on June 9, 1942 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Athens, GA. She and her husband came to Greenville in 1948 when he was employed by J.E. Sirrine Co.
She was a founding member of Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church. She was a teacher at O.L.R. Catholic School in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. She substituted at St. Mary’s Catholic School and Christ Church School.
She served as a volunteer in the Growing Younger Program at Senior Action, and also with the Life Enrichment Center at Greenville Tech.
She is survived by one daughter, Josephine E. Howard “Betsy” Furman (Jim) of Greensboro, NC; two sons, Murray Milton Howard, III, and Mack Lester Howard, both of Greenville; four grandchildren, Theresa “Tracy” Furman Lamothe (Rob), James C. “Jimmy” Furman, Jr. (Karen), Angela F. Murray (Lee), and Alison F. Strafaci (Peter); and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Frances Ann “Beechie” Howard Robinson, sister, Mary Frances Suit Bagwell, and a great-grandson, Samuel Matthew Furman.
The Recitation of the Rosary will take place Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at 6:00 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown, followed by a time of visitation until 8:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 4, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Greenville Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the O.L.R. Building Fund, 3710 Augusta Rd., Greenville, SC 29605; or to the charity of one’s choice.
