Julia Elizabeth League Hammond, of NHC, Mauldin, formerly of 311 McDonald Street, died November 29, 2006. Mrs. Hammond was born in Greenville, SC on December 6, 1911, to the late Edith Adams and George Franklin League, Sr. She is survived by a son, Jim Hammond, of Charlotte, NC., and a daughter, Betty Jenkins and husband Bob, Greenville. She was lovingly known as Gram and Grandma to grandchildren, Perrin Hammond of Pittsboro, NC., Elizabeth Hammond of Hillsborough, NC. and Radford Jenkins and wife, Kyleigh of Greenville; and a great granddaughter, Campbell Jenkins. Mrs. Hammond was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, James Perrin ?Pete? Hammond, Sr. who died February 16, 1991. She was also predeceased by her brothers, William A. League, and George Franklin League, Jr. and his wife, Eleanor, who was a long time loving friend of Mrs. Hammond. A lifelong resident of Greenville, Mrs. Hammond attended Park Grammer School and Greenville High School. She attended college at Converse and Brenau where she majored in music and was a member of Alpha Xi Delta Sorority, Alpha Upsilon Chapter. After her junior year, she left Brenau and later entered Greenville Women?s College where she finished her study of organ with Professor Herman Schafer. Mrs. Hammond and her husband were members of Buncombe Street United Methodist Church. She was an active member of the Susanna Wesley Church School Class and formerly of The Robert Morris Class, and she had a Circle group to which she was very committed. She helped with church bazaars and other special events, and she routinely helped serve supper to the church board members. She also was on the Communion Committee, helping to prepare regularly for communion. During the 1960?s and 70?s, she loved to volunteer her services to the to the Anderson Road Mission as part of her mission work for the church. Mrs. Hammond was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and aunt. Being very supportive of her family?s interests, she volunteered much of her time in services with which her children were involved. In addition, she was a volunteer for the Red Cross for many years, and she and her husband worked with Meals On Wheels for over ten years. Mrs. Hammond continued to support Alpha Xi Delta Sorority and the Alpha Upsilon Chapter all of her adult life. In 1991 she received the Order of The Pearl for her support during 60 years of sisterhood. In 1999, Mrs. Hammond was nominated as a Blue Cross- Blue Shield Ageless Hero, an award celebrating extraordinary people age 65 and older. Through this award, Blue Cross applauds those who inspire others to improve mind, body, and spirit. Mrs. Hammond was a accomplished bridge player, and she played with groups all over Greenville from the time she was a young girl until she was 87. Graveside services will be held Sunday, December 3, 2006 at 3:00 p.m. at Springwood Cemetery. The family is at the home of a daughter, Betty Jenkins, 504 Crescent Avenue.
