Lannie G. Clayton, 69, of Greenville passed away on February 26, 2024, after a courageous battle with ALS. He was born October 28, 1954 to the late Marvin and Violet Clayton. He graduated from J.L. Mann High School in 1972 and from the University of South Carolina in 1976 with an accounting degree.
Lannie started his working career at a public accounting firm where he met his wife Margaret, and he also worked at PYA Monarch for several years. In 1984 he joined Clayton Tile, which his parents founded in 1961. He continued working as long as he could and was especially proud to see the business carry on under the next generation of Claytons. Nothing made him happier than hearing about what was going on at “the shop” when Max came to visit. He loved seeing his employees thrive and be successful and looked at them as part of his extended family.
Lannie and Margaret were married for 43 years and were members of Open Hearts United Methodist Church. Even though he hadn’t been able to attend for quite a while, he felt comforted and surrounded by the love and support of his fellow church members.
Lannie was devoted to his family, and he especially loved being there for every event his sons Andy and Max participated in as they grew up. He taught them to love golf, the Atlanta Braves, and most especially to be a Carolina Gamecocks fan. He was honored to be the best man when his sons were married, and he treasured celebrating his 65th birthday with them on a golf trip to Scotland. He loved being Grandpa to Callie and Tanner and had looked forward to the birth of his third grandchild in June.
Lannie was a humble man who had the unique ability to find comfort and confidence in silence. He loved his many friends, going to concerts and a good party, but never wanted any attention drawn to himself. He and Margaret had also been fortunate to enjoy their extensive travels.
He is survived by Margaret, Andy and his wife Ashley and their children Callie and Tanner, and Max and his wife Alyssa. He is also survived by his brother Lonnie Clayton (Bobbie), sister Jana Smith (Dennis), brother-in-law Jim Edwards (Nancy), and sister-in-law JoAnn Jones (Tom.) In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister-in-law Rebecca Edwards.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, February 29 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 pm at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. The memorial service will be on Friday, March 1st at 11:00 a.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Homes, Downtown. Burial will be private.
Memorials may be made to Open Hearts United Methodist Church, 2703 Augusta St., Greenville, SC 29605 or Touched by ALS, 1140 Woodruff Rd. Ste. 106-247, Greenville, SC 29607.
