Linda Dowling Henderson, wife of Gerald Lee Henderson, received her wings and went to walk with the angels on May 28, 2022, after a courageous battle with metastatic breast cancer. She is now breathing deep, running in flower fields, bedazzling and bedazzled, safe in the arms of her beloved Savior. She was a dearly loved wife, daughter, sister, mother, “Dee”, Great “Dee”, and friend. She was loved by her family “a bushel and a peck”.

Linda was the fourth of 16 children born to the late Francis T. and Charlene Manley Dowling. Starting at a very young age and throughout her life, she demonstrated selflessness by her love and care for others. She was humble, earnest, kind and generous to everyone, extending that same generous spirit to anyone she saw in need, even strangers.

Linda loved her family fiercely, especially her devoted and beloved husband Jerry. Jerry and her three daughters and their families were the very core of her life. Their joy was her joy.

Linda was a member of Greenville ARP Church. Throughout her life, she lived by example by her devout love for God. Linda was a quiet, loyal servant leader in the churches she had been a member of. Over the years, she participated in Bible study groups, Sunday School, Children’s Ministry, and served as Elder and on the Nurture Committee. Outside of church, she was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels of Greenville.

In addition to her husband of 62 years, left to cherish her memory are three daughters, Lisa Hay (Dr. Marshall) of Isle of Palms, Kimberly Woollen (Dr. Claude) of Spartanburg, and Amy Edwards of Greenville; seven grandchildren, Caroline Hay Robinson (Russell), Megan Woollen McNair (Chase), Dr. Ellen Hay Johnson (Dr. Addison), Dr. Todd Woollen, Libby Hay, Will Edwards, and Jack Edwards; as well as five great grandchildren, Charlie, Hays, and Johnny Robinson, Dowling “Dow” and Beezie McNair. Also surviving are eight sisters: Patricia Gibson, Frances Kelley (Jim), Terry Dowling, Adrienne Garrett (Gar), Trina Dowling, and Laurie McBryde, all of Greenville, Debbie Howard (Dr. John) of Mount Pleasant, and Kathryn Gebler of Thousand Oaks, California; three brothers: Tommy Dowling (Donna), Jimmy Dowling (Carolyn), and Frank Dowling (Laura), all of Greenville; a sister-in-law, Theresa Dowling; a brother-in-law, Charles Davis; an aunt, Lucille Lindsay, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Linda was predeceased by her grandparents Holder and Sallie Mae Manley; in-laws Lee and Geraldine Henderson; two sisters: Becky Clement (Ralph) and Shirley Davis; two brothers: Larry Dowling (Bernadine) and Tim Dowling; two brothers-in-law: Joe Gibson and Keith McBryde; as well as a great grandson, Addison Ander Johnson, Jr.

The family would like to thank Interim Hospice for their support during this difficult time. A special thank you to our angels on Earth: Jamie Chaney, Angela Young, and Sarah Mumford for their unwavering love and kindness to our precious “Dee”.

The celebration of Linda’s life will be held Friday, June 3, 2022 at 1:30 pm at Thomas McAfee Downtown Chapel, 639 North Main Street, Greenville, South Carolina 29601. A private entombment will follow.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, P.O. Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38148-0142.

Linda your kind heart and sweet smile will always linger in my memories. We always hugged at Tommy’s Ham House with our GHS luncheon. Prayers for your family because I know they miss you so very much. God has gained another ANGEL.

May God give you His grace and peace in this time of sorrow. If you ever had the honor of knowing Linda you were blessed. She will live on in our hearts . She is now with her Savior and we can rejoice because she will have no more pain and suffering and have perfect peace in the presents of her lord and savior, Jesus Christ. Linda was a wonderful older cousin to me. We cousins enjoyed spending weekends at the lake house with Nannie. I remember her helping to carry me up the hill to the house when I cut my foot in the lake. I still have the scars so am reminded of her often. Know she will be missed by her family and extended family. Praying for all of you.

Lisa, it has been AGES - maybe high school graduation - since we have been in touch. But I'm close friends with your cousin Lindsay Gibson Heffron, so have known about your mom's illness. I wanted to send my deep sympathy to you and your family. Losing a mama is so difficult! I lost mine in 2020 and then Dad in 2021. My love to you during this new stage of life!

Linda's courage over the years of her battle were an inspiration to us. So sad to lose such a wonderful friend. Jerry, I know your grief and I hope I can be of support as you were when we lost our beloved Fran. Your care for Linda is a great show of love.

Linda and Francis used to keep me at late stay at Our Savior 40 years ago. So Sorry to hear of her passing but she is at peace now with the Lord. Prayers to the family.

To know Linda was to love her. She and Jerry were so faithful and generous to my brother Clark Gaston and my husband Bill Moore. I will always remember their Christian ministry and we were the fortunate recipients of their love and attention. God must need a special angel. We will always remember you dear friend!

We are all richer in spirit and wiser for having known and loved Linda! She taught me by example to treasure simple pleasures, to give everyone you meet your undivided attention, to treasure family, and when bored or lonely, there is always ironing!! When stressed or worried or facing a situation she couldn’t change, she just picked up her iron! I am so thankful that she and Jerry were able to enjoy many years of retirement enjoying weeks at the beach, dining out, cheering for her boys at sports events, and spending treasured time with family. She made many family situations more bearable because of her humble, sincere presence. Your spirit will remain in our hearts!

I am so sorry to hear of this news. We were in the class of 1960 together at Greenville High School and I have always adored and admired Linda. She will be missed.
