Maria Cataldo McKinney, 81, died at her home in Greenville, SC on Sunday, August 7. She was the former Director of Volunteer Services at St. Francis Hospital and the widow of the late James F. McKinney, Jr., longtime editorial editor of The Greenville News and former managing editor of The Piedmont, the former afternoon newspaper of Greenville. Mrs. McKinney also had worked at The Piedmont, as a proof reader. Mrs. McKinney was a former member of the Board of Directors of United Ministries and a former officer of the St. Mary?s Catholic Church Women?s Club. She also had donated time to March of Dimes, Toys for Tots and the Jaycee-ettes. She was a native of Island Bay, New Zealand. In her youth there she was a ballroom dancer, a championship tennis player and a basketball coach. She also won a doubles table-tennis championship in a shipboard tournament during her journey to America after World War II. During the war, Mrs. McKinney met her future husband in Island Bay, a suburb of Wellington, New Zealand where Mr. McKinney was stationed with the US Marines. The couple was married in Island Bay and then came to Belton, SC, her husband?s home town. They later lived in Columbia, SC where Mr. McKinney worked with the Associated Press and The Columbia Record, before coming to Greenville when Mr. McKinney joined the Greenville News- Piedmont Co. Mrs. McKinney was the daughter of the late Gelsomina and Francesco Cataldo of Island Bay, New Zealand and Ercolano, Italy. She was preceded in death by a son, James F. McKinney, Jr. of Greenville and Charleston, SC, and by two brothers, Pasquale Bus Cataldo of Lower Hutt, New Zealand and Giovanni John Cataldo of Island Bay, New Zealand; and special friend, Mrs. Vera Starks of Greenville. Survivors include, three daughters and two sons-in-law, Joan McKinney and Dallas K. Campbell of Springfield, VA., Rita M. McKinney of Greenville, SC., Patricia McKinney Comerford and John Comerford of Warriors Mark, PA.; four grandchildren, James Jason Comerford of Greenville, Kathryn Leigh Comerford of Warriors Mark, PA., Andrew McKinney Amstutz and David Cheshire Amstutz both of Greenville; three sisters, Joyce Caccioppoli of Hastings, New Zealand; Carma Molloy of Auckland, New Zealand, and Nina Styles of Waikanae, New Zealand; two sisters-in-law, Veree Cataldo of Island Bay, New Zealand, Terry Cataldo of Lower Hutt, New Zealand; twenty-eight nieces and nephews; and a special family friend, Shirley Starks Mayes of Greenville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to United Ministries, 606 Pendleton Street, Greenville, SC 29601 or MUSC Hollings Cancer Center, 86 Jonathan Lucas Street, Charleston, SC 29425. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, August 10, 2005 at 7:00 PM with visitation to follow until 8:30 PM at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. A Funeral Mass will be conducted Thursday, August 11, 2005 at 12:00 noon at St. Mary?s Catholic Church. The Rite of Committal will follow in Belton Cemetery. The family will be at the home of a daughter, Rita M. McKinney, 240 Woodland Way, Greenville, SC.
