It is amazing how she was able to be firm and still so positively influential.  The word "cool" is used so often, but I can think of no better word, she was just a cool lady.  She was a real life example of leading with perspective. How she led was a God given gift.

I will never forget her reading on the intercom at Mauldin HS:  "will the student that submitted the request for Hunt, Mike to come to the office for the past few days, will that student please come to the office".

She will never be forgotten.

She was an awesome Principle at Mauldin High School!  When she meant business, she meant business, but she was a fun principle as well!  Rest in peace Ms. Koon, may God Bless you!!

I can't imagine a better choice than Marilyn Koon to open Mauldin High School in 1973. She was an excellent principal who treated her students fairly and with respect -- and she got the students' respect in return! Most of us who were privileged to be her students probably didn't appreciate at the time the gifts that she was giving us, but my guess is that, as we look back, we understand the many ways that she helped us along the road to adulthood. May she rest in peace.

"You can squeeze the lemon, you can get the juice... but to try to beat Greenville just ain't no use!!"
She allowed the class of '92 to change the mascot to the current Raider symbol som in use today, citing the original Red Raider mascot looked "a little light in his loafers"!!!
She approved our new mantra as well...
"It's plain to see you can't change me cause Imma be a Raider for life!!"

Marylin Koon was my counselor at Hillcrest High School. She and Bobbi were close friends and coworkers- often did the good cop/bad cop thing. Always made me laugh! They caught me the one and only time I ever skipped school~ 6th period! I wrote a note and signed my mother’s name to it! I just wanted to leave early with Judy Miller to go pick up our Prom Dresses!! John Corn used to skip Mrs Rudy’s class & just go sit in her office (to make up the class he skipped!) we love her so much. Our prayers are with you Bill, family, and Bobbi️

It is an unfortunate fact that great educators such as Mrs. Hendrix never know how many folks they impact and how much they imprint on each one.  She touched thousands of us over her decades in Greenville County, and I hope she now knows this.  Truly one of the greats.

Marilyn was my mentor and inspired me to major in French at Winthrop. I was lucky to then be hired to teach French at Hillcrest while she was principal. I followed her career after I moved away from the area and was proud of all she accomplished and that I had been a small part of it.

Ms. Koon is the reason I became a graduate of Furman University and a graduate of Campbell University School of Law.  She inspired me to become something more than I thought capable.  At 16 years of age she gave me the “sky is the limit” talk - and for that, I am forever grateful.   Her imprint on my life is felt even now in the careers of my sons, one a lawyer and the other a financial advisor.  My gratitude to you Marilyn, and my deepest sympathies to Bill. Regards, Mark Cumalander
