Martha Stewart Scott

Martha Stewart Scott, 93, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 26, 2008 with family and caregivers at her side. Mrs. Scott was born July 21, 1915 in Greenville. She was the daughter of the late Robert Henry and Mary Thornwell Stewart. She was a homemaker and member of John Knox Presbyterian Church. Surviving are her husband of 68 years, C. Lawson Scott of the home, sons Ford Scott of Greenville and Bob Scott and his wife Nancy, of Franklin, NC She is survived by two grandsons, Travis Scott of Greenville, and George Gentry and his wife Ha, of Columbia, SC; granddaughter Joanna Gentry, of London, England, and two great-grandchildren. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Edwin F. Kagin of Minneapolis, MN, and was predeceased by a son, C. Lawson Scott, Jr., who died in 1999. A graduate of Greenville Senior High School, she attended Greenville Woman's College and graduated from Queens College in Charlotte, NC with a B.S. degree in music. She was a member of the Alpha Pi Sorority. She served on the steering committee which organized the Greenville Symphony Guild and was active in the cultural development of Greenville. She was a charter member of the Greenville Women's Club and a long-time member of the Crescent Music Club where she once served as president. She also helped organize the Crescent Youth Symphony and the first local youth concert, which was held at Bob Jones University with 3, 500 children in attendance. She served as president of the Community Concerts for two years and also served a term as secretary, then served as secretary of the Greenville-Furman Fine Arts Association. She was a volunteer for 30 years in the work at Friendship Chapel, Parker Heights, which is now called Russell Presbyterian Church. She organized Bible Schools, pageants and Tuesday afternoon music classes. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 30, 2008 in the chapel of Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, downtown. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers or memorials, Mrs. Scott requests that everyone take a senior citizen to lunch and have a wonderful conversation!
