Martin Luther Marchant, Jr., 91, of 239 E. Avondale Drive, husband of Josephine Owens Marchant, died Wednesday, August 10, 2005 at St. Francis Hospital, Downtown. Born in Greenville, he was the son of the late Martin Luther and Kathleen Morrah Marchant. A 1935 graduate of The Citadel, he received his Masters degree from Springfield College in Boston, MA. Mr. Marchant worked with New York Life Insurance Company after retiring from the YMCA in Greenville. After being a camper and counselor at Camp Greenville during the 20?s and 30?s, he returned for a 27 year career with the YMCA as Physical Director and then Director of YMCA Camp Greenville. Mr. Marchant was a retired Lieutenant Colonel from the United States Army Reserves and was a WWII veteran. He was a member and past president of the Greenville Lions Club. A lifelong member of Buncombe Street United Methodist Church, he taught Sunday school for many years and was currently a member of the Searchers Sunday School class. Surviving in addition to his wife of 47 years are a son, Martin Luther Marchant, III and his wife Sherri of Greenville; a brother, Francis ?Bubber? Marchant and his wife Mary of Anderson; and four grandchildren, Elise, Luke, Phillip, and Emily Kathleen Marchant. Memorials may be made to the YMCA Camp Greenville, PO Box 390, Cedar Mountain, NC 28718. Visitation will be held Friday, August 12, 2005 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, August 13, 2005 at 11:00 AM at Buncombe Street United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Springwood Cemetery. The family will be at the home of the son, Luther Marchant, III, 3 Ivy Trail, Greenville.

I know how little the words and act of friends can do to ease the sadness that has come to you and Luther's family. Still I want you to know how often I have thought of you all the last few days and how deeply I sympathize with you in your bereavement.

I work in The Citadel Alumni Office with Wally West, who handles the Gold Corps events for Citadel grads each March. We enjoyed Mr. Marchant coming when he could. We will miss him.
