Matthew Scott Parham, 24, passed away suddenly on Saturday, September 24, 2022.

Born in Greenville, SC, he was the son of Jerry Scott Parham and Kristin Gilstrap Riggins.

Matthew was a free spirited child who never took life too seriously and had a gift of making others laugh and feel loved. Matthew was an avid skater and car enthusiast who especially loved his Miatas.

Matthew is survived by his mother and father, Kristin and Devin Riggins; father, Jerry Scott Parham; brother, Christopher Cannon; brother from another mother, Colton Kerr; maternal grandmother, Glenda MacMillan; maternal grandfather, Patrick Gilstrap; maternal great-grandparents, Barbara “Mimi” Bolt and Gerald “Grandpa Mac” MacMillan; paternal grandmother, Maggie Bobo; paternal grandparents, Kimberly “Mema” and Hugh Jerry Parham; uncle and aunt Brian and Gladys Gilstrap; as well as many cousins whom he dearly loved.

Matthew’s maternal grandmother, Deborah “Memaw” Gilstrap preceded him in death by only two weeks. Also preceding him in death are paternal great-grandmother, Connie “Granny” E. Parham; and paternal great-grandparents, George “Pa-Pa” M. and Nelle “Ma-Ma” Bobo.

A Celebration of Matthew’s extraordinary life will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 29, 2022 in the Thomas McAfee Funeral Homes, Southeast Chapel, where the family will receive friends following.

A former teacher ran into me years after I was in her class and called me by name. Surprised, I asked how she could possibly recognize me She replied that you always remember the really good ones and the really bad ones. As one of Matthew's high school English teachers, he was one of the best ever. He was wicked smart, witty without being mean, and so fun-loving and optimistic, he could make you still believe in unicorns. Matthew will always be remembered as one of the best ones.

We are so very sorry for your loss. You have more than your shares of loss in your lifetime and more recently. You all are in our thoughts and prayers. I pray that your memories will give you comfort and peace knowing that he is with family on the other side in Heaven. We love y'all!!
