Norris O'Neil Whitley

Norris O?Neil Whitley, 73, of 720 North Parker Road, died Friday, December 7, 2007 at St. Francis Hospital, Downtown. Born in Albemarle, NC, he was a son of the Minnie Eldora Morton Whitley, of Greenville, and the late John Quince Whitley. He was the husband of Betty Jenell Deese Whitley. Mr. Whitley served four years in the United States Navy, partially aboard the SS New Jersey Battleship. He completed his last 18 years in the U.S. Air Force, which included tours in Vietnam and Korea. Before retiring as a Master Sergeant in June of 1976. He served multiple terms on the Sumter County Drug and Alcohol Commission from 1990-2004 until residing in Greenville for the past year. He was a member of Shaw Air Force Base Protestant Chapel. Surviving, in addition to his mother and his wife, are three daughters, Sonja G. Holder, of Greenville, Tonja D. Ferguson, of Lacombe, LA, and Linda L. Hunt, of Simpsonville; a son, Terry O?Neil Whitley, of Simpsonville; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Joe R. Whitley. Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 11, 2007, at the Chapel at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Northwest. Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 2:45 p.m. Tuesday prior to the service. A private burial service will be held at a later date. The family requests that flowers be omitted and Memorials made to Parisview Baptist Church, 3700 Old Buncombe Road, Greenville, SC 29617. The family is at the residence.
