Rev. Marvin C. Hembree

November 2, 1912 - March 1, 2008
Rev. Marvin C. Hembree, 95, formerly of Donnan Rd., died Saturday, March 1, 2008 at Greenville Memorial Medical Center. Born in Easley on November 2, 1912, he was a son of the late James Anthony and Serena Whitworth Bolick Hembree and widower of Avalonia Falls Hembree. Rev. and Mrs. Hembree were married for over 70 years. Rev. Hembree dropped out of school in the 7th grade to work in a cotton mill. After his call to the ministry, he completed work for his GED, then graduated from North Greenville Academy, North Greenville College and Furman University. During his 50 years in the ministry, he served several Southern Baptist Churches in the Upstate. Churches that he served during his schooling included: Lima and Cleveland First in Greenville County and Durbin Creek and Bethany in Laurens County. Churches that he served full-time included: Glenn Street in Newberry, Slater, Tabernacle in Union, Crosswell, Garner Memorial in Anderson, and Whitefield in Williamston. Churches where he served as Interim Pastor included: Arkwright in Spartanburg, Bethuel and Brushy Creek in Greenville, Tabernacle and Salem in Union, and Hampton Heights, New Liberty and Judson in Greenville. Rev. Hembree was a member of Hampton Heights Baptist Church. Surviving are his son James T. Hembree and wife Claudia W. Hembree of Taylors; grandson, Cliff Hembree, wife Elizabeth and great-grandson, Jacob Hembree, all of Canton, GA; sister, Ruth H. Turner of Cornelia, GA; and brother, Calvin Hembree of Greenville. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Martha Jane Hembree and siblings Ethel B. McCall, Bessie B. Jones, Hazel H. Callaham, Beatrice H. Seymore, Horace "Dude" Bolick, Carl Bolick and James Hembree. Visitation will be held Monday from 7:00 pm until 8:30 pm at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. The Funeral Service will be held Tuesday at 1:30 pm at Hampton Heights Baptist Church, with interment in Graceland Cemetery West. Memorials may be made to The Hembree Family Scholarship Fund, North Greenville University, PO Box 1892, Tigerville, SC 29688. The family is at 19 Fernwood Dr., Taylors.
