Robert ?Bobby? Gage, II, 77, of 520 Chick Springs Road died at his home on Tuesday, April 19, 2005. Born in Chester, SC. and raised in Anderson, S.C., he was the son of the late George Williams and Elise Wannamaker Gage. He was predeceased by his wife Patsy Magarahan Gage. A graduate of Clemson University, Mr. Gage was retired from Chemurgy Products, Inc. after over 40 years of service. Surviving are four daughters and two sons. Carroll Gage Hunter and her husband Jody of Greenville, Rebecca Elise Gage of Hilton Head Island, Annie Gage Gregory of Hilton Head Island, Mary Magarahan Gage of Greenville, Robert Gage, Jr. and wife Melody of Greenville, Francis Magarahan Gage of Greenville. Surviving in addition to his children are one sister and two brothers. Harriett Gage Fairey and her husband Phil of Columbia; George W. Gage, Jr. and his wife Nina of Charleston and Theodore W. Gage and his wife Betty of Spartanburg. Surviving grandchildren are Patche Gregory Pratt, W. Alec Hancock, Patricia H. Austin, Robert Gage III, B.F. ?Bud? Gregory III, Emily H. Lee, William H. Gage, and Elizabeth Ashley Bramlette. Also surviving are eight great- grandchildren. After playing in the 1945 Shrine Bowl for the South Carolina team and graduating from Boys High in Anderson, S.C., Bobby began his collegiate career for Coach Frank Howard?s Clemson Tigers. Playing as a freshman along side of returning World War II veterans, Coach Howard began referring to Bobby as ?schoolboy? and the name stuck. ?Schoolboy Gage? went on to set over thirty records at Clemson and several held for over thirty years. ?Schoolboy? was named MVP of the 1949 Gator Bowl, which capped a perfect season for the Tigers in 1948. Also, in 1948 ?Schoolboy? received All State, All South, All Southern and All American honors. In 1999 Bobby Gage was recognized by a panel of historians as the fifth best football player of all time for Clemson. Bobby was inducted into The Clemson Athletic Hall of Fame, The South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame and the Gator Bowl Hall of Fame. Bobby was drafted in the first round by the Pittsburgh Steelers and played two seasons. In 1950, Bobby ran 97 yards from scrimmage against the Chicago Bears. This run was a NFL record that stood until eclipsed by the current record of 99 yards set by Tony Dorsett. Bobby was a member of Buncombe Street United Methodist Church and faithfully attended services at St. Mary?s Catholic Church which he began attending with his wife Patsy. Funeral services will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary?s Catholic Church. Visitation in Sacred Heart Hall will follow the funeral service from 11:15 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. The committal service will be held at Remembrance Chapel at Woodlawn Memorials may be made to the Free Medical Clinic Patsy M. Gage Memorial Fund, 600 Arlington Avenue, Greenville, SC 29601. The family will be at the home of Carroll and JJ Hunter, 224 Compton Drive, Greenville.
