Ruth Waldrop Sylvester

Ruth Waldrop Sylvester, 92, died Saturday, November 18, 2006. Born in Greenville, Mrs. Sylvester was the daughter of the late John E. and Olive Willis Waldrop. She attended Greenville Women?s College, now Furman University, and received nurse?s training at Mary Black Hospital in Spartanburg. She was a Captain in the U.S. Army, serving in the Phillipines during WWII. She later retired from Civil Service Nursing. Mrs. Sylvester was a member of Dunean Baptist Church and was active in the missionary program and Sunday School. She is survived by three sons, Edmund, Richard, and Joseph Sylvester, all of Columbia; one grandchild, Jessica Sylvester of Columbia; and two sisters, Jean Thomas of Taylors and June Waldrop of the home. She was predeceased by a brother, Col. Harold ?Cy? Waldrop and a sister, Billie Jo Tennis. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 22, 2006, in the chapel of Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown, with visitation prior to the service from 10:00 until 10:30 a.m. Burial will be at Woodlawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Dunean Baptist Church, 21 Allen Street, Greenville, SC 29605.
