Samuel Peter Howard, Jr., 75, husband of Jane Howard, died Wednesday, November 2, 2022 at his home.

Born in Greenville, he was the son of Mary Howayek Howard of Greenville and the late Samuel Peter Howard, Sr.

Mr. Howard was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and was involved with St. Rafka Maronite Catholic Church. He worked for the Department of Corrections while in college. He earned his MBA from USC. He was a six year veteran and Sgt. Third Class of the Army Reserves, where he served as a smoke generator, flame thrower and chemical warfare operator. He worked at Givens Youth Center, taught marketing to veterans at Greenville Tech, and was the owner-operator of Howard’s Liquor Store.

Mr. Howard was an avid outdoorsman and founder of the Greenville Chapter National Wild Turkey Federation. He was a member of the following: Beagle Club, Ducks Unlimited, Upstate Quail Association, Quality Deer Management, SC Certified Grown, Greenville County Soil and Water Conservation District, Greenville Livestock Association, and Forestry and Wildlife Association.

Other accomplishments include Farmer of the Year in 2016. He worked with USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service on several farm land conservation programs. He worked with Clemson University Entomology Dept. on a Fire Ant Control research project, and was a graduate of the Clemson Extension Master Wildlife and Tree Farmer programs.

In addition to his beloved wife of 54 years, he is survived by two daughters, Christine Howard (Michael Kerley) and Leslie Poinsette (Michael); four grandchildren who were the lights of his life, Isabel, Jane, and Michael Poinsette, and Jordan Plumblee; his mother, Mary Howard; brothers, Danny Howard, Jeffrey Howard, and David Howard; two sisters, Susan Smith and Lisa Norris.

A Vigil Service will be held on Monday, November 7, 2022 at 6:00 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown, with visitation to follow until 8:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, November 8, 2022 at 12:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Burial will be in Graceland East Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Monastery of St. Clare, 37 McCauley Road, Travelers Rest, SC 29690.

Jane, I am so sorry for your loss. Just learned that you lost Sam last year. Take care of you and your family. Much love to each of you my friend.

To the entire Howard family my deepest most heartfelt condolences on Sam's passing. I lived in Greenville while in my 40's and Sam was my landlord at the trailer park. In the 4 years that I lived there and knew Sam he became much more than a landlord toe me. In many ways he was my friend, brother, father, mentor and someone I came to love for the enormity of his heart. His obituary clearly states the nature of his character. Through the passing years I knew that Sam was just a phone call away. Just last week my partner, who has heard many Sam stories over our time together, and I were at a sports bar for lunch and they were playing the Gamecocks game from September 2 20023. I mentioned to Brian that Sam had gone to school their, and Brian said "Call Sam and tell him if he'll go to a University of Oklahoma {Brian's alma mater} with me. I'll go to a USC game with him." When I tried to find a contact number for Sam, I found instead his obituary, That broke my heart, Sam was always one of several beloved friends God has blessed me with over the years. I enjoyed getting to know Sam. I truly enjoyed every conversation we had. He and I both shared a deep love for our families, the outdoors and life in general. I loved hearing his stories and he would listen to mine as if it was his families stories. I truly will miss my calls with him. Our caregivers loved spending time with him and Jane! It's heartbreaking news to hear of Sam's passing. His generosity and friendliness was larger than life. He was real inspiration and will be missed terribly. He made the world a better place.

Really enjoyed time I got to spend with Sam hunting and preparing food plots. He taught me a lot. Great person, he will be greatly missed.

Jane and Family, I cannot begin to express our sadness over the loss of Sam. He was such a wonderful person and we thought the world of him. When our son, CJ, asked him to be his Godfather at confirmation he jumped at the opportunity. Breakfast with him at Tommy's over the years brought many happy memories for all.
