Shirley June Mangels

Shirley Gruber Mangels, of Greenville, died Sunday, March 2, 2008. Born in Fontanelle, Iowa, she was the daughter of the late Oscar and Julia Gruber. Mrs. Mangels was a graduate of the State University of Iowa and was a member of Pi Omega Pi honorary fraternity and Phi Gamma Nu professional sorority. She received her Masters degree from Western Michigan University. Upon graduating from college, she was a high school teacher for several years and was currently employed by Furman University, receiving the Chiles-Harrill Award in 2005. Her activities over the years included involvement in her church, serving on the Church Council and as Sunday School and Bible School teacher and memberships in organizations such as PTA, serving as School Fair co-chairman, Newcomer Clubs, Gower Garden Club, Furman Campus Club, and book clubs. Her favorite pastimes were playing tennis, gardening, reading, and traveling. Surviving are her husband, Wayne Mangels; daughters, Susan Mangels of Chicago, IL, Stephanie Watson and son-in-law, Ken, of Kennesaw, GA, Jennifer Mangels of Greenville; grandchildren, Nicholas, Matthew and Samuel Watson; and three sisters, Romona Halpenny of Omaha, NE, Marilyn Overmyer of Northville, MI and Marlene McVay of Tustin, CA and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Rowena Johnson. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Jack Dickey Scholarship Fund, Furman University, 3300 Poinsett Highway, Greenville, SC 29613. Visitation will be held Tuesday, March 4, 2008 from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, March 5, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 421 North Main Street, Greenville.
