Thomas Lafayette Brown, III, 73, husband of Thayer Fleming Brown, died Saturday, June 15, 2013. Born in Gaffney, he was the son of the late Thomas Lafayette Brown, Jr. and Willie Thomson Brown. Tom was a native of Gaffney and a graduate of Davidson College. After serving in the US Army Special Forces, Tom earned an MBA from Emory University and returned to the upstate in 1966. He was a Certified Public Accountant, Certified Financial Planner and Personal Financial Specialist and retired as a partner from Pope, Smith, Brown and King, PA in 2009 after 30 years of practicing accounting in Greenville. Tom had a love for the outdoors. He has hiked and paddled extensively throughout North and Central America Tom was a founding member of the Foothills Trail Conference and served on its Board of Directors. A longtime member of Upstate Forever, Tom joined the Board of Directors in 2011 where he served as treasurer. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a sister, Mary B. Williford of Hollywood, SC; a brother, William T. Brown of Spartanburg; plus a large extended family and wide circle of friends. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, June 19, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, with visitation following. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2310 Augusta Street, Greenville, SC 29605 or Upstate Forever, 507 Pettigru Street, Greenville, SC 29601. I worked with Tom for twenty years at PSBK and thought a great deal of him. I think he was acquainted with half the people in Greenville and I know he will be missed.
