Tim E. Haden, 63, of 141 Swindon Circle, died Saturday, February 23, 2008 at Greenville Memorial Medical Center, after a courageous battle with cancer. Haden is survived by his wife, Peggy Linville Haden of Greenville, stepson and daughter-in-law, Shane and Sherri Aycoth and two grandchildren, Bennett and Erin Aycoth of Woodstock, GA, as well as his aunt, Dale Logsdon of Kissimmee, Fla and uncle and aunt, Joe and Bobbie Logsdon of Silver Springs, MD and a host of cousins. Born in Asheville, NC. he was predeceased by his parents, Harold and Emma Logsdon Haden. Haden was a graduate of Mars Hill College and attended Berklee College of Music, with graduate study at the University of Michigan, University of South Carolina and University of North Carolina-Asheville UNCA. Haden served as Director of Jazz Studies and Artist-in-Residence at UNCA. After his retirement, he continued to support music education as Coordinator of Jazz Studies at Clemson University, guitar instructor and combo director at UNCA, and guitar instructor at North Greenville College. During his career, Haden performed with jazz artists Keith Jarrett, Maynard Ferguson, George Benson, and Stanley Clarke among others. As a studio musician for Motown Records, he recorded and played with such artist as Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye. He organized, arranged music, and performed with nationally recognized guitar trio TRIAD, jazz-fusion group ORACLE and the UNCA Jazz Lab Big Band. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. Services will be held Thursday, February 28, 2008 at 2:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 2310 Augusta Street. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any donations be given to the Tim and Peggy Haden Scholarship Fund at UNCA, Development Office, CPO 1800, One University Heights, Asheville, NC 28804.

Tim Haden was not only an amazing guitar player, teacher and performer, but he was a genuine intellectual who was truly a seeker of understanding in this world. I remember that after my lessons we would often engage in long conversations about history that would expand my world-view profoundly. It was as though I was getting two college level courses (music and history) in one. He proved to be a lasting influence on my development on many levels and I know that he will be missed for many, many years. To Tim I say thank you for all the knowledge you shared and the good it has done for many people.
