Violet Hope Knight Durham, 84, of Greenville, beloved wife of the late John Henry Ferlon Durham passed away on Sunday, October 22, 2023.
She was born in Greenville South Carolina on May 7, 1939, to the late Walter Samuel Knight Sr., and Alma Rose Holcombe Knight.
Violet grew up and attended school in Greenville County. She made her home and life in the beautiful city where her roots ran deep within her community.
Following the tragic loss of her husband, John, Violet displayed incredible strength and independence in her life. She dedicated 15 years to the textile manufacturing industry, showcasing her unwavering work ethic and determination. Additionally, for five years, she served in the security unit at Saint Francis Hospital, further exemplifying her commitment to the well-being of her community.
Violet was a resilient woman, known for her ability to overcome numerous challenges and adversities. Her life was marked by the profound tragedy of losing her husband at an early age, a burden she carried with grace and courage. Through it all, Violet’s unwavering spirit and determination were an inspiration to those who knew her.
Violet will be greatly missed, but her legacy of strength, love and determination will be carried on by those who knew and loved her.
She is survived by a brother, Dr. Paul G Knight of Columbia, SC, and sister, Sybil Francis Knight Hunt (Gene) of Honea-Path, SC.
In addition to her beloved husband, she was preceded in death by five siblings, Walter S. Knight Jr., Betty Lou Knight Bayne, Peggy Jean Knight Byars, Bobby Dale Knight, and Faye Lois Knight Padgett.
A visitation will be held Saturday, October 28, 2023, from 12:30 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Homes, Northwest, with the funeral service to follow at 2:00 p.m. in the Northwest Chapel. Burial will be held in Graceland Cemetery West.
