William “Will” Hughes Gage passed away on October 26th, 2022 surrounded by those who loved him.
A family member put it best – whatever “IT” was, Will had it in spades. He was “cooler than the other side of the pillow” as he loved to say. Will was a vibrant, magnetic soul who never met a stranger. He was big-hearted and ever the champion for the underdog. He was fun-loving, quick-witted and never ceased to conjure a laugh with one of his many perfectly executed one liners. He was charismatic, a light that shone so bright you couldn’t help but gravitate towards him. That was our Will.
He was an avid music buff and the world’s most devout Widespread Panic fan. He traveled the world to see his favorite band play and forged lifelong friendships with those that shared his same love for music.
As the grandson of a record-holding, Clemson football alum, his blood ran orange. If there’s anything he loved as much as his beloved WSP – it was watching the Clemson Tigers play.
Will loved his friends and family fiercely. He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Florence & Hal Mauney, his father and stepmother, Robert & Melody Gage, his siblings Rob Gage (Angie Gage), Elizabeth Thomas (Payne Thomas), Angie Mauney and Chris Mauney and nieces and nephews – Alston Gage, Stephen Gage, Laura Gage, Mary Elizabeth Gage, Amelia Thomas and Olivia Thomas. He is predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Ralph and Juanita Hughes, and paternal grandparents, Robert “Big Daddy” & Patsy Gage.
Will was one of a kind and he touched so many. He will be missed dearly by all that had the pleasure of knowing him. There is a giant, irreparable hole where he used to be, but we find peace knowing he is having a joyous reunion in the sky with his grandparents. Put some Widespread Panic on the speakers and pump up the volume, hug your friends and family, and say a toast to our son, brother, uncle and friend, Will. That’s how he would’ve wanted it.
A celebration of life will be held Thursday, November 3, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. at First Baptist Greenville, 847 Cleveland Street, Greenville, SC 29601. Visitation to follow immediately after the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations of nonperishable food items to stock the food pantry at Triune Mercy Center.
